In October 2017, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.9%) after an increase in September (+0.5%). It shrank strongly in retail trade (−2.3% after +1.7%). It decreased in wholesale trade (−0.6%) after a virtual stability in September. By contrast, it increased in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.0%) after a near stability in September.

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In October 2017, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.9%) after an increase in September (+0.5%). It shrank strongly in retail trade (−2.3% after +1.7%). It decreased in wholesale trade (−0.6%) after a virtual stability in September. By contrast, it increased in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.0%) after a near stability in September.

The sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.8% over the last three months

Over the last three months (August to October), the sales volume in overall trade went up by 0.8% compared to the previous three months. It rose in wholesale trade (+0.6%) and a little bit more in retail trade (+0.9%) – it increased in specialised stores (+0.7%), in non-specialised stores (+0.5%). and more strongly in retail trade not in stores (+4.0%). It also went up in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5%).

The sales volume rose by 4.5% over a year

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade grew by 4.5% over a year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose by 4.4% in wholesale trade. It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.7%) – it grew in specialised stores (+3.9%) and non-specialised stores (+2.0%) as well as in retail trade not in stores (+10.6%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.2%).

Significant downturn in sales volume of retail trade

In October 2017, the sales volume in retail trade fell back sharply (−2.3% after +1.7% in September), especially for the specialised stores (−2.6% after +1.5%). In particular, the sales volume went down in specialised stores of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.; −3.3% after +2.3% in September), in retail of automotive fuel (−3.6% after +1.8%) and in retail of cultural and recreation goods (−3.1% after +0.1%). In non-specialised stores, the sales volume decreased by 2.2% after an increase of 2.3% in September.

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in November 2017 (+1.1%). It should grow by 3.2% year-on-year.

Decrease in wholesale trade

In October 2017, the sales volume in whosesale trade decreased (−0.6%) after a virtual stability in September. It fell back especially in wholesale on a fee or contract basis (−1.7% after −0.8%), in wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (−2.0% after +2.4%), in wholesale of household goods (−1.0% after +0.2%), in wholesale of information and communication equipment (−3.2% after +2.0%). By contrast, the sales volume bounced back in other specialised wholesale (+1.2% after −0.8%) and in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (+3.9% after −2.2%).

Increase in sales volume of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In October 2017, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by 1.0% after a virtual stability in September. This increase was mainly due to a rebound in sale of motor vehicle (+0.8% after −0.2%) and to a further increase in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (+1.4% after +0.6%). The sales volume bounced back in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+1.4% after −0.8%) and in sale and repair of motorcycles (+2.3% after −2.6%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in September 2017 has been revised upwards. Initially stated at +0.3%, it has been set at +0.5%.
