In August 2017, output increased sharply again in services (+1.0% after +1.3% in July).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In August 2017, output increased sharply again in services (+1.0% after +1.3% in July).
Services output increased sharply over the last three months
Over the last three months (June to August), services production rose by 1.1% compared to the previous three months.
It grew in all sectors, especially in business support (+1.5%) and real estate activities (+2.3%). It increased more modestly in transportation and storage (+0.8%), information and communication (+0.4%), accomodation and food service activities (+0.7%) and household services (+0.3%). In this last sector, arts, entertainment and recreation activities edged down (−0.3%).
Output grew strongly over a year
In services, output of the last three months rose strongly over a year (+4.6%), with an increase in all sectors.
Output went up strongly in business support (+5.4%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+6.9%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+4.2%). It grew sharply in other sectors: transportation and storage (+4.6%), information and communication (+4.1%), accomodation and food service activities (+4.6%), real estate activities (+3.1%) and household services (+2.8%).

Further increase in information and communication
After a rebound in July, output in information and communication went up again in August (+2.4%), primarily in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+5.0%) and in publishing activities (+2.5%).
Significant recovery in household services
Output in household services recovered considerably in August (+4.7% after −1.1% in July). It bounced back strongly in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector (+6.6% after −1.2%). In “other personal services”, output also picked up (+2.8% after −1.0%).
Acceleration in accomodation and food service activities
Output in accomodation and food services accelerated in August (+1.7% after +0.5%). It increased again in food and beverage service activities (+1.4%, after +0.7%) and bounced back in accomodation (+2.7% after −0.2%).
Rise in transportation and storage
In August 2017, output in transportation and storage rose again (+0.8%) after a large increase in July (+3.7%). While it rebounded in land transport (+3.1% after −0.9%), it fell back in air transport (−4.2% after +1.9%).
Stability in business support
In August 2017, output in business support activities was almost unchanged (+0.1%) after a rise in July (+1.3%).
It rose again in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.5% after +0.7%), notably in architecture and engineering activities (+2.1%) and in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+0.8%).
On the contrary, output folded in administrative and business support activities (−0.3% after +2.0%), particularly in employment activities (−1.9%) and in other administrative and business support activities (−1.4%).
Revisions
The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in July 2017 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points considering the rounding. Initially published at +1.2%, it has been stated at +1.3%.
