In July 2017, output recovered sharply in services (+1.2% after −1.3% in June).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In July 2017, output recovered sharply in services (+1.2% after −1.3% in June).

Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last three months, services production rose by 1.4% compared to the previous three months.

It grew in business support (+2.8%), transportation and storage (+2.1%), information and communication (+0.9%) and real estate activities (+0.7%). By contrast, it fell back sharply in household services (−2.7%), particularly in arts, entertainment and recreation (−4.7%). To a lesser extent, it also went down in accomodation and food service activities (−0.8%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose strongly over a year (+4.8%), with an increase in all sectors.

Output went up strongly in business support (+6.0%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+6.8%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+5.4%). It grew sharply in transportation and storage (+5.4%), information and communication (+5.0%) and in accomodation and food service activities (+3.6%). It grew more moderately in real estate activities (+1.9%) and in household services (+1.0%).

Significant rebound in transportation and storage

In July, output in transportation and storage picked up strongly (+3.8%) after a large decline in June (−4.1%).

Recovery in information and communication

After a downturn in June (−1.6%), output in information and communication bounced back in July (+1.9%). It went up primarily in telecommunications (+2.4%) and in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+1.5%).

Rebound in business support

In July 2017, output in business support activities bounced back (+1.0% after −1.5% in June).

It started to rise again in administrative and business support activities (+1.2% after −1.3%), notably in employment activities (+4.4%) and in other administrative and business support activities (+4.2%).

Output also recovered in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.7% after −1.7%), particularly in scientific research and development (+3.5%) and activities of head offices and management consultancy (+1.4%).

Rise in accomodation and food service activities

Output in accomodation and food services rose again slightly in July (+0.3%, as in June). It increased in food and beverage service activities (+0.5%, after stability) while it declined slightly in accomodation (−0.2% after +1.1%).

Downturn in household services

Output in household services shrank in July (−1.5%) after a slight increase in June (+0.4%). It diminished significantly in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector (−2.0% after +0.2%). In “other personal services”, output also fell back (−1.0% after +0.6%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in June 2017 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points. Initially published at −1.4%, it has been stated at −1.3%.
