In February 2017, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.4% after an increase of 0.3% in January.

It gathered pace in retail trade (+0.8% after +0.2%). It picked up slightly in wholesale trade (+0.3% after +0.0%). By contrast, it flattened out in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, after +1.3% in January.

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In February 2017, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.4% after an increase of 0.3% in January.

It gathered pace in retail trade (+0.8% after +0.2%). It picked up slightly in wholesale trade (+0.3% after +0.0%). By contrast, it flattened out in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, after +1.3% in January.

The sales volume in overall trade rose weakly over the last three months

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade went up a little (+0.2%). It rose markedly in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7%). It grew more slowly in retail trade (+0.6%). In particular, the sales volume increased markedly in specialised stores (+0.9%) and more slightly in non-specialised stores (+0.4%), while it decreased in retail trade not in stores (−0.7%). Finally, the sales volume in wholesale trade dropped moderately (−0.4%).

On the rise over a year

The sales volume of the past three months in overall trade increased by 1.7% compared to the same period a year before. It rose significantly in retail trade (+2.8%) – it grew in both specialised and non-specialised stores (+2.9%) and more moderately in retail trade not in stores (+1.2%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.1%). By contrast, the sales volume in wholesale trade was practically stable (−0.1%).

Acceleration in retail trade

In February 2017, the sales volume in retail trade gathered pace (+0.8% after +0.2% in January). It accelerated notably in specialised stores (+1.1% after +0.2%). In particular, the sales volume in other specialised stores (clothing, shoes etc.) bounced back sharply (+2.6% after −1.2%). It increased again in other household equipment (+1.2% after +0.7%) and cultural and recreation goods (+1.6% after +1.2%). By contrast, it shrank markedly in retail sale of information and communication equipment (−5.7% after +5.0%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should rose again in March 2017 (+0,6%), taking year-on-year growth to +3.1%.

Slight increase in wholesale trade

The sales volume in whosesale trade grew slightly in February 2017 (+0.3%) after stability in January. It bounced back strongly for wholesalers of information and communication equipment (+8.9% after −5.4%). It lost steam in wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+0.7% after +3.1%) and food, beverages and tobacco (+0.4% after +3.3%). By contrast, two wholesale subsectors faced a further decrease in sales volume: household goods (−1.4% after −0.4%) and agricultural raw materials and live animals (−2,9% after −3.3%).

Stability in sales volume of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In February 2017, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles levelled off (+0.0% after +1.3% in January). It recovered strongly in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related accessories (+13.8% after −7.2%). It grew a little in sale of motor vehicles (+0.2% after +0.8%). Conversely, it shrank in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−1.2% after +3.1%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume in overall trade in January 2017 has been revised upwards. Initially stated at +0.1%, it has been set at +0.3%
