Every index in this issue (except those on large scale food retailing survey) is in volume (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In September 2016, the sales volume slowed slightly in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2% after +0.3%). It also slowed down in accommodation and food service activities although it has been significantly increasing since June (+0.5% on monthly average). It levelled off in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.1%) after a strong rebound in August (+3.6%) . The sales volume decreased again in household services (−0.5% after +1.1%).

Slight slowdown in retail trade

In September 2016, the sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles slowed sligthly (+0.2% after +0.3%). According to early estimates, it should be virtually stable in October (+0.1%).

The sales volume grew again in non-specialised stores (+0.5% as in August). It recovered slightly in specialised stores (+0.2% after −0.5%): it increased again in the retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (+1.7%) and

rebounded in the retail sale of information and communication equipment (+2.8% after −2.4%). On the other hand, it fell back in retail trade not in stores (−1.6% after +5.8% in August).

The sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles was stable over the third quarter and increased sharply year-on-year (+1.8% y-o-y).

Slowdown in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

After a sharp rebound in August, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles stalled in September (+0.1%). It was virtually stable in sale of motor vehicles. Whereas it fell back in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−0.6% after +1.4%), it rose again in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+1.1% after +2.1%) and in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories (+3.7% after +2.0%).

The sales volume of the whole sector held steady over the third quarter and grew substantially year-on-year (+4.5% y-o-y).

Further rise in accommodation and food service activities

In September, the sales volume grew again in accommodation and food service activities (+0.5% on average over the last four months), due to a recovery in accommodation (+1.5% after −1.7% in August). The sales volume flattened out in food and beverage service activities (+0.1% after +1.5% in August). The rise in sales volume in restaurants and fast food activities (+1.6%) was offset by the decrease in event catering and other food services (−2.2%) and in beverage serving activities (−0.6%)

The sales volume of the whole sector improved markedly over the third quarter (+1.3% q-o-q) and year-on-year (+3.3% y-o-y).

New decrease in household services

In September, the sales volume in household services declined again but at a lower pace (−0.5% after −1.5%). This decrease was due to a sharp drop in other service activities (−1.3% after +2.9 %): repair of computers (−2.2%) and other personal service activities (hairdressing, laundry services, etc.: −0.8%). The sales volume recovered slightly in arts, entertainment and recreation (+0.3% after −5.6%), more significantly in gambling and betting activities (+3.3% after −3.3%).

The growth in sales volume in household services was robust over the third quarter (+1.0% q-o-q) and year-on-year (+3.6% y-o-y).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume for August 2016 has been raised by 0.2 points in household services and by 0.1 points in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles. It was unchanged in the other sectors.

In October 2016, turnover declined in large-scale food retailing

In October 2016, the turnover in large-scale food retailing fell slightly (−0.2% after +1.2% in September). Whereas sales of food products strongly declined (−2.1% after +2.4%), those of non food-products recovered slightly (+0.4% after –0.2%). Sales of automotive fuel accelerated (+3.1% after +1.4% in September).
