In January 2015, the sales volume decreased in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.7%). On the contrary, it increased slightly in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2%) and in accommodation and food service activities (+0.3%). It levelled off in household services.

Except for indices from Emagsa survey, every index in this issue is in volume (tax excluded) and seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In January 2015, the sales volume decreased in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.7%). On the contrary, it increased slightly in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2%) and in accommodation and food service activities (+0.3%). It levelled off in household services.

Slowdown in the retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In January, the sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles decelerated (+0.2% after + 0.3% in December and +1.0% in November). According to early estimates, it is likely to be steady in February 2015.

While the sales volume improved slightly in specialised stores (+0.4%) where it grew especially in retail sale of other household equipment (+1.5%) and of cultural and recreation goods (+1.7%), it was almost stable in non-specialised stores (–0.1%).

The sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased over the last three months (+0.9% q-o-q) and year on year (+1.8%).

Downturn in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

The sales volume in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell in January (–0.7% after +0.8%). This decline in almost all sectors was more significant in sale of motor vehicles (–0.9%).

The sales volume was almost stable over the last three months (+0.1% q-o-q) and increased very slightly year-on-year (+0.2%).

Slight rise in accommodation and food service activities

Sales volume in accommodation and food service activities rose slightly in January (+0.3%). It bounced back clearly in accommodation (+2.8% after –0.8%) but declined in food and beverage service activities (–0.5% after +0.1%), mainly due to sales volume decreases in restaurants and fast food services (–0.4%) and in event catering and other food services (–0.9%).

The sales volume of the whole sector went down over the last three months (–1.5% q-o-q) and year on year (–2.6%).

Stability in household services

In January, the volume of sales in household services remained stable, as a result of contrasted changes: the decline in gambling and betting activities (–4.4%) and in repair of computers and personal and household goods (–0.7%) was offset by increases in creative, arts and entertainment activities (+3.9%) and in sports activities and amusement (+0.8%).

The sales volume in household services was nearly stable over the last three months and year-on-year (+0.1%).

Revisions

The change for December 2014 was revised by +0.2 point in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, by –0.1 point in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles and in household services and by +0.1 point in accommodation and food service activities.

Monthly survey on large-scale food retailing in February 2015

In February 2015, turnover in large-scale food retailing was nearly stable (–0.1%). Sales of automotive fuel recovered significantly (+2.7% after –12.1% in Janvuary). Sales of non-food products went on improving but with a less sustained pace (+1.0% after +4.0%), while those of food products were almost flat (–0.1%).
