In August, households’ expenditure in goods increased by 0.2% in volume*, after having decreased by –0.2% in July. The slight decrease in July is mainly imputable to a decrease of car purchases and household durables. The increase in car purchases and energy expenditure contributes to the slight increase in August .

Engineered goods : decreasing
Durables : decreasing in July, stable in August
After a decrease in July (–0.8%), households’ expenditure in durables were stable in August. This is due to a bounce in car purchases in August (+0.9%) after a decrease in July(–1.5%) imputable to the secondhand market. On the other hand, after a sharp increase in June (+3.9%), purchases in household durables decreased again in July ( –0.7%) and August (–1.7%). The decrease concerns particularly purchases in furniture.
Textile-leather : decreasing
Purchases in textile and leather remained dynamic in July (+1.0% after +3.6% in June) but decreased in August (-2.3%).
Other engineered goods : stability
The slight increase of expenditures in other engineered goods in July (+0.2%) is balanced by a decrease of the same scale in August (–0.2%), notably due to a decrease in hardware consumption.
Food products : back to stability
Households’ expenditure in food products slightly decreased in July (–0.4%), then stabilized in August (+0.1%).
Energy : increasing
After a slight increase in July (+0.2%), consumption of energy products accelerated in August (+2.6%), in particular for petroleum products.
