Aggressive behaviour and alcohol consumption

Laurent Bègue

To better understand the links between aggressive behaviour and alcohol consumption, an epidemiological survey based on the quota method was conducted among 2,019 people representing the population aged 18-65 living in the Paris (Île-de-France) and Nord-Pas de Calais Regions. Nearly 40% of respondents consumed alcohol in the two hours prior to their involvement in a fight. The quantity of alcohol consumed on a single occasion is significantly linked to the fact of having taken part in such violence, particularly among people with an educational attainment equal to or less than the baccalauréat (end of secondary school). Younger men and those with a high level of chronic aggressive tendencies are more often involved in such acts. When we confine the data to aggressive behaviour outside the family, nearly 25% of respondents report having consumed alcohol in the two hours preceding the incident. In addition to gender and age, the factors associated with participation in this type of attack are the quantity of alcohol consumed on a single occasion and chronic aggressive tendencies (particularly among women), along with hypomania (mood disorder characterized by persistent irritability and exhilaration), fear of losing one's job (only among older respondents), and number of siblings (only among women).
