In October 2015, the sales volume declined in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.5%), in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–1.2%) and in household services (–0.4%). By contrast, it rose slightly in accommodation and food service activities (+0.2%).

Except for indices from Emagsa survey, every index in this issue is in volume (tax excluded) and seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In October 2015, the sales volume declined in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.5%), in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–1.2%) and in household services (–0.4%). By contrast, it rose slightly in accommodation and food service activities (+0.2%).

Decrease in retail trade

In October 2015, the sales volume went down in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.5%), after a virtual stability in September (–0.1%). According to early estimates, the decline should accelerate in November (–1.2%).

The sales volume fell at the same pace in retail sales in specialised as in non specialised stores (–0.6%). In specialised stores, the sales volume declined above all in the retail sale of other goods (pharmacy, clothings, etc.: –1.3%).

The sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles went up over the last quarter (+0.3%, q-o-q) and year-on-year (+3.3%).

Downturn in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In October, the sales volume in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell (–1.2%) for the first time after nine consecutive months of growth. It fell back substantially in sale of motor vehicles (–1.8% after +1.4% in September). However, it went on increasing slightly in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (+0.2% after +0.3%).

The sales volume rose over the last quarter (+0.8%) and year-on-year (+4.7%).

Slight increase in accommodation and food service activities

The sales volume in accommodation and food service activities recovered slightly in October (+0.2% after –0.9% in September). The rebound was mainly driven up by restaurants and fast food services (+1.0% after –1.5%). By contrast, the sales volume fell back in accommodation (–0.9%) and in beverage serving activities (–0.8%).

The sales volume of the whole sector decreased quarter-on-quarter (–1.0%) and year-on-year (–2.2%).

Further decline in household services

In October, the sales volume in household services fell again (–0.4% after –1.2% in September). In particular, it slipped back in gambling and betting activities (–2.7%) and in creative, arts and entertainment activities (–2.2%) and it went on declining in sports activities and amusement (–0.4%). Conversely, the sales volume rebounded in repair of computers (+1.2%).

The sales volume in household services increased very slightly over the last quarter (+0.2%) and was virtually stable year-on-year (+0.1%).

Revisions

The variation of the sales volume for September 2015 has been lowered by 0.1 points in accommodation and food service activities. It has been raised by 0.1 points in household services. It was unchanged in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Monthly survey on large-scale food retailing in November 2015

In November 2015, the turnover in large-scale food retailing went on falling (–0.5% after –0.6% in October). Sales of non-food products decreased significantly (–2.6% after –0.6%). However, sales of food products (–0.1%) and sales automotive fuel (+0.1%) were virtually stable.
