Data collection

Until 2007, the survey was conducted each month except August. Since 2008, it has been conducted every month.

Households are surveyed in three consecutive months.

The survey is conducted by telephone. Fieldwork for the monthly surveys takes place in the first three weeks of each month.

Sampling method

The CAMME survey is a 3-month rotating panel.

The monthly sample is made up of 3 sub-samples:

  • the "incoming" third (1,250 households constituting the 1st wave) corresponds to households interviewed for the first time;

  • the "median" third corresponds to the households that responded in the first wave (a little over 500) and that are interviewed for the second time (second wave);

  • the "outgoing" third corresponds to households that responded in the second wave (a little over 500) and that are interviewed for the last time (third wave).

Since 2012 the samples are drawn from the tax source. A number search on the White Pages website (principle used for the household survey on Information and Communication Technologies) is then performed. However, this protocol does not solve the problem of lack of coverage from which all telephone surveys currently suffer. About 30% of households are now found in the phone book, and this proportion is steadily decreasing.

From May to September 2017, a new methodological test was conducted, aiming to broaden the scope of the survey, using the telephone numbers present in the tax source, in phone numbers found in the phone book. Following the positive results (good acceptance of the respondents, no or little impact on the economic series) of this test, these two sources are used to contact households since May 2019. The joint use of these two sources increases the survey coverage to nearly 80%.

This results in an overall monthly sample of approximately 2,250 numbers. On average, we currently get 1,700 completed questionnaires per month.
