Sampling method

Samping method was changed in 2026 for HOSSAs, in connection with the drop in sample size. The sample has been updated for campsites and repeated for hotels.

The sampling frame is the index of tourism hotels, index managed by Insee.

For hotels, the stratification criteria are

  • a geographical axis : region x tourist area (Ile-de-France, coastlines, ski mountain area, provincial urban area, other metropolitan area, overseas department)

  • the category (1 to 5 stars or unclassified),

  • as well as the size of hotels in number of rooms, for the largest strata.

For campsites, the stratification criteria are also :

  • a geographical axis : region

  • the grouped category (upscale/downscale)

  • and the size in number of pitches.

The draw is exhaustive in a few small regions (less than 150 campsites).

For Holiday and Other Short-Stay Accomodations (HOSSA), the stratification criteria are

also :

  • a geographical axis : region*tourist area (Paris and surroundings/coastline/ski mountain area/proincial urban area/other)

  • the type of accommodation (tourist residence/holiday villages/other),

  • and the size in number of bed places.

The draw is also exhaustive in some regions due to the low number of HOSSAs.

Sample size

Hotels: survey is conducted with a national sample of 8,400 hotels out of a total of 16,900 Campsites: survey is conducted with a sample of 3,900 campsites out of 7,500. Holiday and Other Short-Stay Accomodations (HOSSA): survey is conducted with a sample of 1,900 establishments out of a total of 3,700.

Data compilation
