Franc–euro converter: euro and franc purchasing power

Calculate the purchasing power of an amount of money over time, taking into account inflation and currency changes
The purchasing power of 0,00 franc in 2000 is therefore the same as that of 0,00 euro in 2025, taking inflation into account.

Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money over time. The converter makes it possible to express the purchasing power of a sum of money from a given year as an equivalent amount for another year. It takes into account inflation over the period and any change of currency (old francs to new francs, francs to euros).

It answers a simple question: what would a given amount of money be worth today, taking into account the average evolution of prices?

The converter is available from 1901. The usable currencies are the euro (1 euro = 6.55957 francs in 2002), the franc, and the old franc (1 franc = 100 old francs in 1960). All of these currencies can be used regardless of the date.

Why convert?

Compare the price of a product over time

Mr. Froment buys a baguette every morning at the L’Épi de Blé bakery. In 1995, this baguette cost 3.80 francs.

How much is that worth today?

According to the currency converter, 3.80 francs from 1995 is equivalent to 0.93 euros in 2025. This allows Mr. Froment to determine whether the price of his baguette has risen more than the general price level over that period.

Measuring the evolution in purchasing power

Ms. Marjolaine works at Jardin des Fleurs. In 2022, her salary was 1,600 euros per month.

What salary would give her equivalent purchasing power in 2024?

According to the converter, 1,600 euros in 2022 is equivalent to 1,711.61 euros in 2024, taking inflation over the period into account. Ms. Marjolaine can thus determine whether she has gained or lost purchasing power over the period.

Estimate the value of savings at different dates

In 2025, Mr. Pecunia has savings of 10,000 euros.

How does this compare to his savings in 2000?

According to the converter, 10,000 euros in 2025 is equivalent to 43,345.64 francs in 2000.

Method

For each year, inflation is measured using the general consumer price index (annual average). This index makes it possible to estimate, between two given periods, the average change in the prices of goods consumed by households. From 1901 to 1992, the overall index for urban households with a blue-collar or employee head is used (the largest population available over this period). From 1993, when it began to be published, the index for all households in metropolitan France is used. From 1999, the index for all households in France (metropolitan France and the overseas departments and regions) is used.
