In June 2023, the number of business births for all enterprises bounced back month on month (+2.5% after ‑3.2% in May, seasonally and working-day adjusted). This rebound is due to micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+4.2% after ‑4.6%). However, conventional business births decreased slightly again (‑0.5% after ‑0.8%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months (July 2022 to June 2023) increased by 1.8% compared to that of the same period one year earlier (July 2021 to June 2022).

This major change temporarily weakens the monthly monitoring of business births, in particular due to a change in the registration delays in the SIRENE business register. Rebound in business births in most sectors over a month

In June 2023, seasonally and working-day adjusted, business births increased over a month in most sectors. They bounced back sharply in education, human health and social work activities (+13.1% after ‑8.7%), as well as in business support activities (+4.2% after ‑3.5%). The rebound was more moderate in household services (+1.4% after ‑6.4%). Business births continued to rise in information and communication (+1.6% after +2.2%). However, they decreased again in industry (‑2.5% after ‑0.1%) and construction (‑1.7% after ‑0.5%).

Slight rise in business births in Q2 2023

The raw number of business set up in Q2 2023 increased slightly, in comparison with Q2 2022 (+0.2%). This rise was due to micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations, which rose sharply (+5.3%). Conversely, company births (‑8.8%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births (‑4.0%) decreased sharply.

Over this period, industry made the largest positive contribution to the overall increase (+1,900 business births compared to second quarter of 2022, representing a contribution* of +0.7 points). Within this sector, the rise was due in particular to that in “activities of production of electricity” (+2,600 business births over the second quarter of 2023), mainly for the production of photovoltaic electricity.

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Increase in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up over the last twelve months (from July 2022 to June 2023) increased (+1.8% year on year). This increase was due to micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations (+4.4%). Conversely, conventional sole proprietorships’ births decreased sharply (‑4.3%) and those of company births more slightly (‑1.1%).

Over this period, the decline is particularly marked in transportation and storage activities (‑13.9% year on year), a sector in which business births had expanded strongly during the health crisis.

Revisions

The monthly variation in the overall number of business births in May 2023 has been revised downwards by 0.4 points, to ‑3.2% instead of ‑2.8%. Besides, in raw data, the number of business births from March to May 2023 has been revised significantly downwards, due to an upward re-estimation of the share of business creation formalities that have been invalidated.
