graphiqueTotal consumption of goods in volume

- Source: INSEE.
Engineered goods: downturn
In September 2026, household consumption of engineered goods fell back (-1.1% after +0.8% in August). Purchases of textile-clothing products declined sharply (-5.8% after +0.1%), while those of durable goods fell back slightly (-0.2% after +1.4%).
Over the third quarter of 2026, consumption of engineered goods slowed down (+0.3% after +1.4% in Q2).
Textile-clothing: sharp decline
In September 2026, spending on clothing and textiles declined sharply (-5.8% after +0.1% in August). This decline is mainly due to the sharp drop in clothing spending: the unusually high temperatures in September (the second-hottest month of September since 1900) led to lower spending in this category.
Durable goods: slight downturn
In September 2026, consumption of durable goods fell back slightly (-0.2% after +1.4% in August), due to a further fall in purchases of household durables (-1.1% after -0.1%), particularly household appliances. Conversely, purchases of transport equipments rose again slightly (+0.2% after +2.6%), particularly those of new vehicles.
Other engineered goods: stability
In September 2026, consumption of “other engineered goods” remained stable (after +0.4% in August).

Energy: slight rebound
In September 2026, household energy expenditures rose slightly anew (+0.2% after -2.4% in August), as the further decline in electricity consumption was largely offset by the rebound in fuel spending.
Over the third quarter of 2026, energy consumption rebounded (+1.2% after -2.0% in Q2), driven by another increase in electricity spending.

Revisions
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for August 2026 has not been revised. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the seasonal adjustment (SA) and working day adjustment (WDA) coefficients have been updated.
For more information
*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, production price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Institut de la Maison-IPEA, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), OpenHealth, GFK, Logista.
