At 99, the synthetic indicator has gained three points and has almost reached its long-term average (100). This improvement mainly results from the rise in the balances related to ordering intentions and past sales.

The balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has increased for the third month in a row and has reached its average
In August 2026, the balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has increased for the third month in a row and has reached its long-term average. The one related to past sales has sharply increased and has moved slightly above its own for the first time in a year. Conversely, the balance related to general business outlook has slightly retreated after its sharp rise in the previous month, and has left its average.
The balance of opinion related to the current level of stocks has fallen back to its June level, above its average.
The balance related to expected selling prices has been stable and remains well above its average.
The balances related to past and expected workforce size have both fallen back and have moved away from their respective average.
Lastly, the balance on felt economic uncertainty has edged down again and remains below its long-term average.

The business climate has risen again in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles)
In August 2026, the business climate in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) has improved for the third month in a row: it has gained four points and stands at 103, above its long-term average (100). This improvement mainly results from the balances of opinion related to past sales and ordering intentions, which stand above their respective average after respectively five and three consecutive months of increase. The balance related to expected sales has increased for the third month in a row and has moved closer to its average. Conversely, the one related to general business outlook has slightly retreated after its sharp rise in the previous month and remains close to its own.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, the business climate has slightly fallen back: it has lost one point and stands at 93. It has remained below its long-term average (100) since July 2024. The balance related to past sales has slightly increased again, but remains well below its average. The ones related to general business outlook and ordering intentions are virtually stable, well below their respective average.

Revisions
The business climate for July in retail trade, including trade and repair of motor vehicles, has been revised downwards by three points (after rounding). This revision results from the inclusion of late responses from companies.

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles” is composed for 66% of retail trade and for 34% of trade and repair of motor vehicles.
For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
