Over a month, manufacturing output fell in all major branches
In May 2026*, output declined in all major branches of the manufacturing industry. It fell back in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑2.8% after +3.3%) and in the manufacture of electrical, electronic and computer equipment (‑2.3% after +1.4%). Output decreased in the manufacture of “other industrial products (metallurgy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc.)” (‑0.4% after ‑0.1%) and in the food and beverage industries (‑0.3% after a stability in April). It dropped in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (‑9.0% after +1.7%) due to a maintenance shutdown.
In mining and quarrying, energy, and water supply, output bounced back (+3.2% after ‑1.0%). The increase, which affected both electricity and gas supply, was due to higher consumption linked to cool temperatures in mid-month, followed by a heatwave at the end of the month.

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.
The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
