Energy: sharp downturn
In April 2026, household energy expenditures fell back (-2.9% after +0.5% in March). This decline was driven by the downturn both in purchases of petroleum products (in a context of increasing fuel prices) and in gas and electricity consumption, as April 2026 was the third warmest April since 1900.

Revisions
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for March 2026 has been revised upwards by 0.2 percentage points, to +0.9% instead of +0.7% after rounding. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the series have been aligned with the provisional 2025, semi-final 2024 and final 2023. In addition, the seasonal variation adjustment (SVA) and working day adjustment (WDA) coefficients have been updated. The quaterly accounts estimation models have also been revised, as is the case every year when the detailed first-quarter results are published. The discontinuation of the Banque de France retail trade survey have implied additional revisions on concerned items.

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, production price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Institut de la Maison-IPEA, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), OpenHealth, GFK, Logista.
