In May 2026, the business climate has sharply deteriorated again in the whole sector comprising retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles. At 89, the synthetic indicator has lost five points, has moved further away from its long-term average (100), and has reached a level unobserved since September 2014 (excluding the health crisis). This deterioration mainly results from the further marked decline in the balance related to ordering intentions.

The balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has sharply deteriorated again
In May 2026, the balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has deteriorated again and has moved further away from its long-term average; it has reached a level unobserved since June 2013, excluding the health crisis. The balance related to the general business outlook has decreased for the third month in a row and has also moved away from its average; it has reached a level unobserved since October 2014, excluding the health crisis. Conversely, the balance related to past sales has rebounded, while remaining below its average. The one related to expected sales is virtually stable and remains below its average level since April 2024.
The balance of opinion related to the current level of stocks has sharply increased and has moved back above its average.
The balance on expected selling prices has continued to rise; it has reached a level unobserved since June 2023, well above its average. The bi-monthly one on past selling prices is stable, above its average.
The bi-monthly balance related to cash position has sharply decreased and has moved away from its average since January 2023.
The balance related to expected workforce size is stable, at its average level, while the one related to past workforce size has increased again and has returned to its own.
Lastly, the balance on felt economic uncertainty has decreased, below its long-term average.

The business climate has sharply declined again in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles)
In May 2026, the business climate in retail trade, excluding motor vehicles, has lost five points and stands at 91, well below its average level (100). It has reached a level unobserved since December 2014, excluding the health crisis. The balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has sharply decreased and has moved further away from its average. The balances related to the general business outlook and past sales are virtually stable, below their respective averages. The balance on expected prices has sharply increased for the fourth month in a row and has reached its highest level since October 2023.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has lost one point. At 91, it stands below its average since July 2024. The balances of opinion related to ordering intentions and to the general business outlook have sharply decreased again and have moved further away from their average; the latter has reached a level unobserved since June 2013. Conversely, the balances related to past and expected sales have rebounded, while remaining well below their average.
