Starting next month, the Informations Rapides issues on the volume index of sales in trade will be published around 50 days after the end of the month under review, instead of 60 days. As a result of this shorter publication delay, the early estimate for retail trade will no longer be released.

In January 2026, the volume of sales in trade was stable over a month, after a 0.8% increase in December 2025.

In January 2026, the volume of sales fell in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, while it rebounded in retail trade

In January 2026*, the volume of sales fell anew in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-1.2% after a stability). This decline was mainly driven by a further fall in sales in trade of motor vehicles (-1.9% after -0.4%).

The volume of sales was virtually stable in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-0.1% after +1.6%). Within this sector, developments were mixed: sales fell back in “other specialised wholesale (fuels, wood, chemicals, etc.)” (-1.3% after +2.0%), while they slowed but remained dynamic in the wholesale trade of information and communication equipment (+3.9% after +5.0%).

Lastly, the volume of sales bounced back in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.7% after -0.2%). It rebounded in specialised stores (+0.8% after -0.2%), driven by a strong rebound in sales of “other household equipment" (+3.3% after -3.0%), and in retail trade not in stores (+0.9% after -0.3%). The volume of sales increased moderatly in non specialised stores (+0.3% after a virtual stability).

From November 2025 to January 2026, the volume of sales went up by 2.2% compared to the same three months a year before

The cumulative volume of sales of the three months under review (November 2025 to January 2026) in overall trade was 2.2% higher than that of the same period a year earlier. It rose sharply in wholesale trade (+2.0%) as well as in the retail trade (+3.2%). It also increased, though more moderately, in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.6%).

In the retail trade sector, sales increased year on year in specialised stores (+3.8%), in retail trade not in stores (+6.4%) as well as in non-specialised stores (+1.5%).
