In January 2026, manufacturing output rebounded (+0.6%) Industrial production index - January 2026
In January 2026, production rebounded in the manufacturing industry (+0.6% after -0.7% in December 2025). It also recovered across the whole industry (+0.5% after -0.5%).
The industrial production index (IPI) series are subject to an annual review process over a 7 years cycle. Thus, every year, one seventh of the branches surveyed are reviewed in order to improve the measure of the production. The purpose of this review and any resulting updates is to guarantee that the indices remain robust and to adapt them to economic or technical developments, in particular by including the monitoring of new products and by eliminating those whose production has become very low. The results of the 2025 review are included in this publication. The renovated series are backcast to January 2022, which may lead to revisions since that date.
Furthermore for the branches monitored in working hours, productivity coefficients have been revised with national accounts data published in 2025. This leads to revisions of the indices.
At the same time, the industrial production index (IPI) and the index of the production in volume in construction (IPVC) are subject to an annual update of the weights. The weights for years 2023 to 2025 have been updated with the national accounts data published in 2025. The inclusion of these new weights leads also to revisions of the series.
Finally, the seasonal and working day adjustment (SA-WDA) models have also been revised over the recent past to improve the quality of the indices.
More information about these changes is available in the “Documentation” tab of the web version of this publication.
- Over one month, manufacturing output was back on the rise, due only to the rebound in the manufacture of transport equipment
- Over a year, output was up by 1.9% in the whole industry
- Over one month, output fell back by 1.4% in construction
- The monthly evolution of the December 2025 manufacturing index has been slightly revised upwards

Over one month, manufacturing output was back on the rise, due only to the rebound in the manufacture of transport equipment
In January 2026*, manufacturing output rebounded, driven only by an increase in the manufacture of transport equipment (+9.9% after -12.8%), particularly in other transport equipment (+19.1% after -20.1%) and more specifically in aerospace construction. Conversely, output decreased in all branches: it fell back in the manufacture of “other industrial products (metallurgy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc.)” (-0.9% after +1.2%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages industries (-0.8% after +1.9%), in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (-0.5% after +1.9%), and it fell again in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-3.4% after -0.9%).
In mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, production was stable, after +0.1% the previous month.

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.
The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
