In December 2025, the increase in sales volume was concentrated in the wholesale trade
In December 2025*, the increase in sales volume was mainly driven by the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7% after -0.7% in November). Whithin this sector, this increase was driven by almost all sub-sectors, but most notably by the rebound in sales of food products, beverages and tobacco (+2.4% after -1.2%), as well as in “other specialised wholesale (fuels, wood, chemicals, etc.)” (+2.2% after -1.8%).
Sales volumes was virtually stable in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.1% after -0.2%). Within this sector, dynamics were mixed: sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories bounced back (+0.8% after -0.6%), while they slightly fell back in the sale of motor vehicles (-0.2% after +0.1%).
Lastly, the volume of sales contracted in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-0.4% after +0.3%). It fell back in specialised stores (-0.5% after +0.2%), driven mainly by the decrease in sales of “other household equipment" (-3.9% after +2.2%). It also fell back in non specialised stores (-0.2% after +0.3%) and in retail trade not in stores (-0.3% after +0.7%).
Year on year, the volume of sales of the fourth quarter of 2025 went up (+2.2%)
The cumulative volume of sales of the fourth quarter of 2025 in overall trade was 2.2% higher than that of the fourth quarter of 2024. It rose sharply in wholesale trade (+2.0%) as well as in the retail trade (+3.2%). It also increased, though more moderately, in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.4%).
Within the retail trade, sales increased year on year in specialised stores (+4.2%), in retail trade not in stores (+6.0%) as well as in non-specialised stores (+0.8%).

Early retail trade estimate for January 2026
According to early estimates, the volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to increase in January 2026 (+0.3% over a month). Over the cumulative three months from November 2025 to January 2026, it would be 2.9% higher than the same three months a year earlier.
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall trade sales volume for November 2025 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points compared to the previous release, and now stands at -0.3% (after rounding).
