Energy: rebound
In December 2025, household energy expenditures were back on the rise (+0.8% after -2.0% in November 2025 – revised data), driven by the rebound in unleaded petrol and diesel consumption, boosted by low prices. Gas and electricity consumption fell for the second consecutive month, because of above-average temperatures in December.
Over the fourth quarter of 2025, energy consumption slowed down (+0.8% after +1.2% in Q3 2025 – revised data), due to the slowdown in gas and electricity consumption.

Revisions
The monthly change in household consumption of goods for November 2025 has not been revised. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the seasonal adjustment (SA) and working day adjustment (WDA) coefficients have been updated.
For more information
*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).
Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);
– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);
– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, production price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), OpenHealth, GFK, Logista. The GFK data for December relating to consumption on computers and electronic goods and on household appliances was exceptionally unavailable.
