In January 2026, the business climate has clearly retreated in the whole sector comprising retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles. At 99, the synthetic indicator has lost five points and has come back just below its long-term average (100). It has erased almost all of the sharp increase observed last month. This downturn results from the decrease in balances on ordering intentions, particularly in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles).

The balance of opinion on ordering intentions has clearly retreated
In January 2026, the balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has clearly fallen back and has moved just below its long-term average. The balance related to expected sales has clearly retreated as well and has moved away from its own. Conversely, the balance related to past sales has slightly rebounded and has moved closer to its average. The balance related to the general business outlook is stable, above its own.
The balance associated with the current level of stocks has fallen back and has moved closer to its average.
The balance of opinion on expected selling prices has decreased again and has reached its average level. The bimonthly balance related to past selling prices has increased again and has moved away from its own.
The bimonthly balance related to the cash position has slightly decreased again, moving further away from its average and reaching an unobserved level since November 2023.
The balance on expected workforce size has decreased and has moved away from its average; that on past workforce size is stable, well below its own.
Lastly, the balance on felt economic uncertainty is stable, below its long-term average.

The business climate has retreated more in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) than in trade and repair of motor vehicles
In January 2026, the business climate has clearly returned to a downward trend in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) : at 101, it stands just above its long-term average. The balances related to ordering intentions and to expected sales have clearly fallen back, just below their average. Conversely, the balance related to past sales has rebounded and has moved back above its average.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has retreated more slightly and has moved away from its long-term average. The balance related to ordering intentions has retreated and has fallen back below its average. The balance related to expected sales has strongly returned to a downward trend, and that on past sales has decreased again. Both of them have moved away from their average.
