In December 2025, the business climate has strongly rebounded in the whole sector comprising retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles. At 104, the indicator that synthesises it has gained seven points, has clearly moved above its long-term average (100), and has reached its highest level since January 2024. This rebound mainly results from a rise in the balances related to ordering intentions both in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles), and in trade and repair of motor vehicles. Conversely, the balances related to workforce size remain well below their average.

The balance of opinion on ordering intentions has strongly rebounded
In December 2025, the balance of opinion related to ordering intentions has strongly rebounded and has moved above its long-term average, reaching a level not seen since February 2022. The balances related to the general business outlook and to expected sales have increased for the third month in a row; the former has moved back above its average, while the latter has moved closer to it. Conversely, the balance related to past sales has retreated and has moved below its average.
The balance related to the current level of stocks has increased for the fourth month in a row and has moved further away from its average.
The balance of opinion on expected selling prices has fallen back, while remaining above its long-term average.
The balance related to expected workforce size is stable and remains below its long-term average. The one related to past workforce size has fallen back and has moved further away from its own.
Lastly, the balance on felt economic uncertainty is virtually stable, below its average.

The business climate has clearly increased again in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles), and has strongly rebounded in trade and repair of motor vehicles
In December 2025, the business climate has clearly increased, for the third month in a row, in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) and has moved away from its long-term average. The balances related to ordering intentions and to the general business outlook have increased for the third month in a row; the former has moved above its long-term average, while the latter has moved away from its own. The balance related to expected sales has clearly increased again and has moved above its average; the one related to past sales has clearly retreated and has moved below its own.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has strongly rebounded. At 99, it has gained seven points and has almost returned to its long-term average. The balances related to ordering intentions and to general business outlook have sharply rebounded and have moved above their respective average. The balance related to expected sales has rebounded less strongly and has moved closer to its average. The one related to past sales is virtually stable, below its own.
