In September 2025, the volume of sales in trade was virtually stable over a month (-0,1%), after a strong rebound the previous month (+1,0% in August 2025).
In September 2025, sales volume were stable in retail trade, virtually stable in wholesale trade and slightly down in the trade of motor vehicles
In September 2025*, the volume of sales in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles was virtually stable over a month (-0.1% after +1.2% in August). In particular, it fell sharply in “other specialised wholesale (fuels, wood, chemicals, etc.)” (-2.2% after +1.6%), while continuing to increase in the wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+1.3% after +1.7%).
The volume of sales fell back slightly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-0.2% after +1.5%), mainly due to a contraction in sales of maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (-3.3% after +4.3%).
Lastly, the volume of sales was stable in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (after +0.4%). Sales volume bounced back in specialised stores (+0.5% after -0.2%), mainly due to a recovery in “other goods in specialised stores (pharmacies, clothing shops, shoe shops, etc.)” (+0.9% after -1.3%) and to the further increase in automotive fuel sales (+0.8% after +0.4%). Conversely, sales volume fell back in non specialised stores (-0.7% after +1.3%) as well as in retail trade not in stores (-0.4% after +1.3%).
The volume of sales of the third quarter of 2025 increased by 1.6% over a year
The volume of sales of the third quarter of 2025 in overall trade increased by 1.6% compared to the same period a year earlier. It rose significantly in the retail trade (+2.3%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade (+1.3%) as well as in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.3%).
Within the retail trade, sales grew year on year in specialised stores (+3.1%) and in non-specialised stores (+1.8%). Conversely, they declined in retail trade not in stores (-1.1%).

Early retail trade estimate for October 2025
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles would be virtually stable in October 2025 (-0.1% over a month). Over the cumulative three months from August to October, it would be 1.9% higher than in the same three months a year earlier.
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall trade sales volume for August 2025 was unchanged, remaining at +1.0% (after rounding), as in the previous publication.
