In September 2025, the price of oil in euros fell again (‑1.7% month on month, after ‑4.0% in August), as did that of gas (‑1.1% after ‑3.7%). Conversely, the prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) accelerated over one month (+2.4% after +0.9%) and increased by 1.2% over one year. Prices in euros of industrial raw materials accelerated (+2.6% after +0.4%) and increased by 5.5% over one year. Prices of strategic raw materials tended to rise. Finally, prices in euros of food commodities accelerated too over one month (+2.2% after +1.3%) but fell by 2.1% year on year.

Oil and gas prices fell again

In September 2025, the price in dollars of North Sea crude oil (Brent) continued to decrease (‑0.8% after ‑4.4% in August), averaging $67.4 per barrel. In euros, the fall was a little more marked (‑1.7% after ‑4.0%), due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar over the period. Over the past year, the price per barrel fell sharply, in dollars (‑9.0%) as well as in euros (‑13.8%).

The price of natural gas on the European market (TTF) also fell month on month (‑1.1% after ‑3.7%), averaging €32.7/MWh; year on year, it decreased by 10.7%. Lastly, the price of uranium in euros accelerated sharply over one month (+5.7% after +0.7%), but remained down year on year (‑8.1%).

Prices in euros of industrial raw materials accelerated

In September 2025, prices in euros of industrial raw materials accelerated month on month (+2.6% after +0.4% in August). Over one year, they were up by 5.5%.

Prices of mineral materials increased again (+3.5% after +0.7%). Prices of precious metals sharply accelerated (+8.5% after +0.7%), mainly due to the rise in the price of gold. Prices of non-ferrous metals bounced back (+1.9% after ‑0.2%) and those of ferrous metals continued their rise for the third consecutive month (+2.2% after +2.6%). Year on year, mineral material prices increased by 7.7%, driven by the sharp increase in the prices of precious metals (+33.9%).

Prices of agro-industrial raw materials decreased for the seventh consecutive month (‑3.2% after ‑1.7%). Prices of sawn softwood decreased again (‑10.3% after ‑3.9%), as did those of paper pulp (‑3.1% after ‑1.5%) and tropical sawn wood (‑0.4% after ‑0.1%). On the contrary, prices for hides bounced back (+3.0% after ‑1.0%). Prices for natural textile fibres increased again (+1.9% after +0.4%), as well as those of rubber which continued their rise for the fourth month in a row (+1.4% after +1.9%). Year on year, prices of agro-industrial raw materials fell by 8.0%, mainly because of the decline in the prices for paper pulp (‑17.6%) and natural rubber (‑13.3%).

Prices in euros of strategic raw materialstended to rise

In September 2025, the price of molybdenum accelerated sharply month on month (+14.8% after +1.2% in August), as did that of silver (+11.0% after +1.2%). Price of cobalt continued to increase (+0.9% after +0.4%), as did the price of lithium (+2.9% after +5.9%). Price of platinum bounced back (+6.5% after ‑3.5%), as did those of palladium (+4.6% after ‑7.6%), of copper (+2.3% after ‑0.9%) and of nickel (+0.4% after ‑0.3%). On the contrary, price of chrome continued to fall, for the fourth consecutive month (‑6.8% after ‑4.1%).

Prices in euros of food commodities accelerated

In September 2025, prices in euros of food commodities accelerated (+2.2% after +1.3% in August). Prices of meat increased (+2.5% after a stability), as did those of oilseeds (+3.0% after +5.4%) and tropical commodities (+1.8% after +7.9%). Prices of seafood products bounced back (+2.6% after ‑7.8%), as well as those of cereals (+2.0% after ‑4.3%). Conversely, prices of sugar fell back sharply (‑4,5% after +0,5%). Year on year, prices of food commodities decreased by 2.1%, but it masks important changes in the opposite direction. On the one hand, prices of sugar still dropped (‑27.7%), as did those of cereals (‑26.7%), of oilseeds (‑10.3%) and of seafood products (‑9,3%). On the other hand, those of meat increased sharply (+19.0%).

Natural gas: TTF (futures contracts in the Netherlands) is considered as the benchmark market in Europe.

Uranium: the price monitored is that of triuranium octaoxide (U3O8) listed on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Energy: prices of energy are monthly averages.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw material prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).

Strategic materials for the industry: the list of strategic materials monitored is a non-exhaustive selection of raw materials with which the French industry is particularly dependent, especially with regard to the energy transition. This selection is based on the work of the French Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM) on critical and strategic materials.
