In September 2025, the business climate has deteriorated again in the whole sector comprising retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles. At 92, the indicator that synthesises it has lost one point. At its lowest level since April 2022, it has moved away from its long-term average (100). This slight decline mainly results from the deterioration in the balances related to past sales and to the general business outlook. The business climate has deteriorated again sharply in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles), while it has rebounded in trade and repair of motor vehicles.

The balance of opinion related to general business outlook has clearly decreased
In September 2025, the balance of opinion on the general business outlook has clearly decreased again and has moved away from its long-term average; it has reached its lowest level since April 2022. The balance related to past sales has fallen sharply and has moved back below its long-term average. The one on expected sales has decreased for the third consecutive month in a row and has moved away from its own.
The balance associated with the current level of stocks has rebounded and remains above its long-term average since June 2023.
The balance of opinion on expected workforce size is almost stable, well below its long-term average. The one on past workforce size has strongly fallen back and has moved away from its own.
The balance associated with order intentions is virtually stable, below its average.
The balance of opinion on expected selling prices has slightly increased again and has moved further away from its average. The bimonthly balance on past selling prices has decreased and has moved closer to its own.
Lastly, the balance on felt economic uncertainty has rebounded and has moved closer to its long-term average.

In September 2025, the business climate has deteriorated again sharply in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) and has reached its lowest level since November 2022. The balance related to ordering intentions has decreased again and has moved away from its long-term average. The balance related to past sales has fallen sharply, as have those on the general business outlook and on expected sales. The latter two have moved away from their respective averages.
In trade and repair of motor vehicles, the business climate has rebounded. At 91, it has gained three points and has moved closer to its long-term average. The balance related to ordering intentions has rebounded strongly, though it remains well below its average. Conversely, the balance related to past sales has fallen back and has moved away from its own. Lastly, the balance on the general business outlook has slightly declined anew, remaining below its long-term average.

Revisions
The business climate for July 2025 in retail trade (including trade and repair of motor vehicles) has been revised upwards by one point (after rounding). This revision is mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from companies.

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles” is composed for 66% of retail trade and for 34% of trade and repair of motor vehicles.
For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.
