In April 2025, the volume of sales in trade increased over a month by 0.7% (after +0.5% in March).

In April 2025, the sales volume grew again in wholesale trade and in retail trade

In April 2025*, as in the previous month, the increase in overall trade sales was mainly driven by the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.9% after +0.6%). Sales volume bounced back particularly in wholesales of food, beverages and tobacco (+1.5% after ‑0.4%) and rose again in the agricultural raw materials and live animals (+3.3% after +6.4%). Among the sub-sectors of wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles, only sales in “other machinery, equipment and supplies” fell back over the month (‑0.6% after +1.8%).

Sales volumes continued to increase in the retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.6% after +0.3%), driven by a further increase in specialised stores (+0.6% after +0.5%) as well as in non-specialised stores (+0.6% after +0.1%). Within specialised stores, the “other goods in specialised stores (pharmacies, clothing shops, shoe shops, etc.)” contributed most to the increase (+0.7% after +0.9%).

Lastly, the volume of sales was virtually stable in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.1% after +0,3%). It bounced back in motor vehicle equipments trade (+0.6% after ‑0.7%), but conversely, it fell back in the motor vehicles trade (‑0.3% after +0.7%).

From February to April 2025, the volume of sales decreased by 0.5% compared to the same three months a year before

The cumulative volume of sales in overall trade between February and April 2025 was 0.5% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased sharply in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑4.1%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.0%). Conversely, the volume of sales increased in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.3%): it grew in specialised stores (+2.8%), in non-specialised stores (+1.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (+1.7%).
