In March 2025, the volume of sales in trade increased over a month by 0.4 % (after ‑0.1% in February).

In March 2025, sales volume grew in the three main trade sectors

In March 2025*, the volume of sales increased in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.5% after ‑0.1%). In particularly, it accelerated in the agricultural raw materials and live animals (+5.9% after +0.4%), in the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (+1.7% after +0.6%) and in “other specialised wholesale (fuels retailers, wood, chemicals products, etc.)” (+1.2% after remaining stable). Conversely, it fell back in the wholesale of information and communication equipment (‑3.0% after +1.6%) and in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (‑0.8% after +0.6%).

Sales volumes bounced back in the retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3% after ‑0.3%). This rebound was mainly due to the specialised stores recovery (+0.5% after ‑0.5%). Within specialised stores, the increase was driven by the return to growth in sales in “other goods in specialised stores (pharmacies, clothing shops, shoe shops, etc.)” (+0.8% after ‑1.0%) and to a lesser extent by the sales acceleration in the information and communication equipment (+3.4% after +0.5%).

Lastly, the volume of sales rose again in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2% as in the previous month), driven mainly by the rebound in sales of motor vehicles (+0.6% after ‑0.3%).

The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2025 went down by 0.8% over a year

The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2025 in overall trade was down by 0.8% compared to the same period a year earlier. It decreased sharply in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑4.5%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.2%). Conversely, the volume of sales increased in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.0%): it grew in specialised stores (+2.4%), in non-specialised stores (+1.2%) and in retail trade not in stores (+2.1%).
