Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 0.7% in May 2025, after +0.8% in April, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This fall in inflation should be explained by the slowdown in the price of services, particularly the slowdown of those of transport and the sharper drop in those of communications, and the increasing fall in energy prices. Conversely food prices should accelerate slightly. Prices of manufactured products and tobacco should follow the same trend as last month.

Over one month, consumer prices should fall by 0.1% in May 2025, after +0.6% in April. The prices of energy should fall for the fourth consecutive month, driven by those of petroleum products and gas. Conversely, food prices should rise further. The prices of services, manufactured goods and tobacco should be stable over a month.

Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should rise by 0.6% in May 2025, after +0.9% in April. Over one month, it should decrease by 0.2%, after +0.7% in the previous month.

Definition: the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is designed for comparison of consumer price inflation between Members States of the European Union. It is computed for all households in France. The main difference between HICP and CPI is about the health costs: HICP is based on net prices of social security reimbursements and CPI is based on gross prices.
