Monthly change: +0.6% in April; year-on-year change: +0.8%
In April 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.6% over one month, after +0.2% in March. This rise in prices was mainly due to the increase in prices of services (+1.1% after a stability), driven by the strong rebound in those of transports (+10.2% after ‑2.8%), and a further rise in the prices of “other services” (+0.7% after +0.3%). The prices of food increased again over a month (+0.7% after +0.3%), those of manufactured products stalled (+0.1% after +1.1%), and those of energy fell for the third consecutive month (‑1.6% after ‑1.5%).
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices increased by 0.3% in April 2025 after ‑0.2% in March.
Year on year, consumer prices went up by 0.8% in April 2025, as in March and in February. The fall in prices of energy (‑7.8% after ‑6.6%) was offset by the increase in prices of services (+2.4% after +2.3%) and food (+1.2% after +0.6%). The prices of manufactured products moved at the same pace as in March (‑0.2%), like those of tobacco (+4.1%).
Stability in core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation stood at +1.3% in April 2025, as in March and in February.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) increased by 0.7% over a month, after +0.2% in March. Year on year, it rose by 0.9%, as in March and February.

Further fall in energy prices over a year
Year on year, prices of energy fell by 7.8% in April 2025, after ‑6.6% in March.
This decrease in prices, which increased again, was notably due to the fall in the prices of petroleum products (‑10.4% after ‑7.2%), as in the case of diesel (‑11.0% after ‑7.8%), petrol (‑10.8% after ‑7.2%) and liquid fuel (‑10.7% after ‑6.9%).
The prices of electricity also decreased at a faster rate than in March (‑14.1% after ‑12.8%), as those of solid fuel (‑5.0% after ‑4.9%). Conversely, the prices of gas accelerated strongly over a year (+29.2% after +18.9%): in April 2025, they rose by 1.8% over one month, while they had fallen by 6.3% in April 2024.
Slight rise in inflation of services year on year
Year on year, prices of services rose by 2.4%, after +2.3% in March.
Over one year, the prices of transport rebounded (+3.9% after ‑0.4%) driven by the prices of airfares which were back on the rise (+6.2% after ‑3.8%). Those of transport by train were stable (after ‑1.9%) while the prices of transport by road slowed down (+5.0% after +5.7%).
Prices of health services accelerated year on year (+1.4% after +1.0%).
Those of rents, water and household refuse collection also accelerated slightly (+2.7% after +2.6%).
Conversely, the prices of communication services fell at a slightly faster rate than in March (‑11.8% after ‑11.4%).
The prices of “other services” slowed down (+3.2% after +3.5%), driven by those of insurance (+8.9% after +11.6%), accommodation services (+1.3% after +5.7%), and to a lesser extent catering (+2.1% after +2.2%). Contrariwise, the prices of cultural and recreational services accelerated over a year (+1.7% after +0.7%) like those of social protection (child care services, retirement homes for elderly persons and residences for disabled persons, services to maintain people in their private homes; +4.5% after +4.0%).

Food prices accelerated again year on year
Year on year, food prices accelerated again in April 2025 (+1.2% after +0.6%).
Prices of food excluding fresh products accelerated over one year (+0.9% after +0.2%): they were notably driven by the acceleration in prices of non-alcoholic beverages (+6.4% after +2.3%), in particular soft drinks (+8.0% after +1.1%) following the increase in taxation of sweetened drinks, and by the acceleration in prices of coffee (+10.5% after +4.9%) and of cocoa and chocolate powder (+12.5% after +7.3%). The prices of sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery accelerated sharply (+6.1% after +3.8%), linked to the continued rise in chocolate prices (+15.7% after +10.7%). Those of bread and cereals accelerated slightly over a year (+0.3% after +0.2%), while the prices of meat declined at a slower pace than in March (‑0.1% after ‑0.4%), like those of milk, cheese and egg (-0.4% after -0.8%). Conversely, prices for oils and fats slowed down year on year (stable after +0.8%), like those of alcoholic beverages (+0.1% after +0.2%)
The prices of fresh products accelerated slightly (+4.0% after +3.8%); the rise in prices of fresh fruit (+4.8% after +3.4%) was only partially offset by the slowdown in prices of fresh vegetable (+5.1% after +5.5%) and fresh fish (+2.2% after +3.7%).
New fall in prices of manufactured products year on year
Year on year, the prices of manufactured products fell by 0.2% in April, as in March.
The prices of clothing and footwear slowed down over a year (+0.1% after +0.5%), while those of health products fell at a slower pace than in March (‑1.2% after ‑1.4%).
Over a year, prices of “other manufactured products” were stable (after ‑0.1%). On the one hand, the prices of vehicles slowed down (+1.1% after +1.2%) like those of glassware, tableware and household utensils (+0.7% after +1.3%), and those of major household appliances fell at a faster rate than in the previous month (‑1.9% after ‑1.6%). On the other hand, the prices of newspapers and periodicals accelerated (+2.2% after +2.1%) like those of equipment for sport (+0.2% after stability), and prices of non-durable household goods decreased at a slower pace than in the previous month (‑1.3% after ‑2.1%), like those of furniture and furnishings (‑0.2% after ‑0.4%) and games, toys and hobbies (‑0.5% after ‑0.9%).

Compared to the provisional estimates published on 30 April 2025, year-on-year changes in CPI is confirmed. Month-on-month change in CPI has been revised upwards by 0.1 point, as have the month-on-month and year-on-year changes in HICP.
