Over a month, output increased mainly in the manufacture of transport equipment
In March 2025*, output increased, for the third month in a row, in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.1% after +3.7%): it slowed down in the “other transport equipment” (+3.0% after +4.8%) and accelerated in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+3.3% after +2.2%). Output bounced back sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+9.6% after ‑7.5%). It was virtually stable in the “other manufacturing industries” (+0.1% after +1.0%). On the contrary, it decreased again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑2.0% after ‑0.5%), especially in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (-2.0% after -0.6%). Output fell back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑0.6% after +3.4%) and decreased again slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.3% after ‑0.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was down by 1.0%
Output of the first quarter of 2025 was lower than that of the first quarter of 2024 in the manufacturing industry (‑1.0%) and in the whole industry (‑0.4%).
Over this one-year period, output went down in the “other manufacturing industries” (‑1.8%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑1.4%). It decreased slightly in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑0.4%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.2%). On the contrary, it increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+2.6%) and increased sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+10.9%).
Output in the most energy-intensive industries remained low compared to the level of 2021
In the context of the sharp rise of energy prices between 2021 and 2023, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which contributed to the decrease in their production. Output over the last three months (January to March 2025) remained thus down sharply compared to that of the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise in energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑29.9%), the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑16.7%), the manufacture of glass and glass products (‑15.9%), and the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑12.8%).

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.
The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
