Over a month, the upturn in output was mainly driven by the rebound in “other manufacturing industries”

In February 2025*, output bounced back in the “other manufacturing industries” (+1.2% after ‑0.4%), and even more strongly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.1% after ‑3.2%). It speeded up in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.2% after +1.1%): it bounced back in the “other transport equipment” (+4.1% after ‑2.4%) and slowed down in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+1.8% after +7.2%). On the contrary, it decreased again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑2.2% after ‑0.1%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (‑6.9% after ‑2.1%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.2% after ‑0.1%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was down by 1.9%

Cumulative output over the last three months (December 2024 to February 2025) was lower than that of the same months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (‑1.9%) and in the whole industry (‑1.0%).

Over this one-year period, output went down sharply in the “other manufacturing industries” (‑2.2%), more specifically in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (‑5.2%), the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (‑5.4%) and in the manufacture of rubber, plastic and other non-metallic mineral products (‑5.3%). It declined also sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑5.7%), notably in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (‑10.7%), and more modestly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑0.8%). On the contrary, it increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+3.2%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+8.3%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.5%).

Output in the most energy-intensive industries remained low compared to the level of 2021

In the context of the sharp rise of energy prices between 2021 and 2023, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which contributed to the decrease in their production. Output over the last three months (December 2024 to February 2025) remained thus down sharply compared to that of the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise in energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑23.6%), the manufacture of glass and glass products (‑17.4%), the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑16.6%), and the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑14.0%).

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.

The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
