In January 2025, the volume of sales in trade was virtually stable over a month : ‑0.1% after +0.1% in December 2024.

In January 2025, the sales volume kept decreasing in the trade and repair of motor vehicles

In January 2025*, the volume of sales was down sharper in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.7% after ‑0.4%), due mainly to the decline in the sale of motor vehicle (‑2.8% after a stability).

The volume of sales in the wholesale except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles was virtually stable over a month (‑0.1% after +0.7%). In particular, it fell in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (‑1.0% after +2.7%) and in trade in agricultural products and live animals (‑1.5% after ‑1.0%). These falls were offset mainly by a rebound in “other specialised wholesale” (+1,4% after ‑0.4%).

Lastly, the volume of sales picked up in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.7% after ‑0.6%). It bounced back in specialised stores (+1.6% after ‑0.8%) while it decreased again in non-specialised stores (‑0.3% after ‑0.3%) as well as in the trade not in stores (‑0.8% after ‑0.6%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales went up across all sub-sectors, particularly in “other goods in specialised stores (pharmacies, clothing shops, shoe shops, etc.)” (+1.7% after ‑0.2%) and “other household equipment (sales of furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.)” (+2.3% after ‑2.5%).

From November 2024 to January 2025 the volume of sales went down by 0.5% compared to the same three months a year before

The cumulative volume of sales of the three months under review (November 2024 to January 2025) in overall trade was 0.5% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased sharply in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑5.1%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.6%). Conversely, the volume of sales increased in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.8%): it grew in specialised stores (+1.8%), in non-specialised stores (+1.8%) and retail trade not in stores (+2.3%).
