Over a month, manufacturing output fell back sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment

In December 2024*, output fell back sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑5.4% after +4.0%): it fell back strongly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (‑11.0% after +6.4%) and more modestly in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (‑2.0% after +2.6%). It decreased in the “other manufacturing industries” (‑1.0% after ‑0.1%), notably weighed down by the downturn in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (-7.9% after +0.9%). On the contrary, it bounced back substantially in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.8% after ‑0.6 %) and slightly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.4 % after ‑1.1%). Output sped up in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.2% after +0.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+0.8% after +0.3%).

Over a year, manufacturing output declined by 1.9% in the fourth quarter

Output of the fourth quarter of 2024 was 1.9% lower than that of the fourth quarter of 2023 in the manufacturing industry, and 1.2% lower in the whole industry.

Over this one-year period, output went down in the “other manufacturing industries” (‑1.8%). It decreased sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑7.9%): it decreased strongly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailer (‑16.5%) and more modestly in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (‑2.1%). Output decreased also in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑1.8%). On the contrary, it increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+2.5 %), the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.6%), and the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+4.4%).

Output in main energy-intensive industries remained low compared to their 2021 level

In the context of high electricity and gas prices invoiced in 2024 to firms given the contracts agreed in 2022 and 2023, energy-intensive industries have been particularly exposed to rising production costs, which may affect their output. In these sectors, output of the fourth quarter of 2024 remained thus down sharply compared to that of the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise of energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑23.7%), the manufacture of glass and glass products (‑20.2%), the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑14.9%) and the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑11.6%).

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.

The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
