In November 2024, the volume of sales in trade was stable over a month, after ‑0.3% in October.

In November 2024, the volume of sales in wholesale trade was virtually stable and recovered slightly in retail trade

In November 2024*, the volume of sales fell back in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.4% after +1.6% in October), mainly due to the fall in the sale of motor vehicles (‑0.7% after +2.0%).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles was virtually stable over a month (+0.1% after ‑0,7%). It bounced back in the agricultural raw material and live animals sector (+2.0% after ‑1.2%) as well as in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (+0.6% after ‑0,3%), and fell again in the wholesale of household goods (‑1.5% after ‑0.5%).

Lastly, the volume of sales recovered slightly in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.2% after ‑0.4%). It bounced back in specialised stores (+0.3% after ‑0.7%), slowed down in non‑specialised stores (+0.2% after +1.3%) and continued to fall in trade not in stores (‑1.0% after ‑4.1%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales of “other household equipment” (sales of furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.) picked up anew (+1.1% after ‑1.1%) as in other goods specialised stores (+0.3% after ‑1.6%).

From September to November 2024, the volume of sales decreased by 0.6% compared to the same three months a year before

The cumulative volume of sales of the three months under review (September to November 2024) in overall trade was 0.6% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased sharply in the wholesale and repair trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑4.8%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.2%). Conversely, the volume of sales increased in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.6%): it grew in specialised stores (+3.0%), in non-specialised stores (+1.5%) and in retail trade not in stores (+4.6%).

Early retail trade estimate for December 2024

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to decrease in December 2024 (‑0.2% over a month). Over the fourth quarter of 2024, it would be 2.2% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in October 2024 has been revised downwards by 0.1 points at ‑0.3% (after rounding) compared to the previous release.
