Total consumption of goods in volume

  • Source: INSEE.

Engineered goods: further increase

In December 2024, household consumption of engineered goods increased again (+1.9% after +0.6% in November 2024 – revised data) mainly due to the acceleration in purchases of durable goods and, to a lesser extent, to the rebound in purchases of textile-clothing.

Over the fourth quarter of 2024 as a whole, consumption of engineered goods accelerated (+0.9% after +0.1% in Q3 2024).

Durable goods: acceleration

In December 2024, consumption of durable goods accelerated (+3.0% after +1.2% in November 2024 – revised data). This growth is mainly explained by a rise in purchases of transport equipments, especially new cars and motorcycles (in a context of application of new regulatory standards in December 2024, then in January 2025), as well as household equipments such as household appliances, electronic products and computers.

Textile-clothing: rebound

In December 2024, spending on clothing and textiles rebounded (+1.8% after ‑0.9% in November 2024 – revised data). This increase is mainly explained by a rise in spending on clothing and to a lesser extent by a rise in purchases of shoes and leather.

Other engineered goods: slight increase

In December 2024, consumption of “other engineered goods” rose slightly (+0.1% after +0.4% in November 2024 – revised data).

Energy: sharp rebound

In December 2024, household energy expenditures rebounded sharply (+2.5% after ‑0.9% in November 2024 – revised data) mainly due to the increase in electricity consumption, because of a return to temperatures close to seasonal averages after a particularly mild month of November, and the one in gasoline and diesel.

Over the fourth quarter of 2024 as a whole, energy consumption retreated (‑0.9% after +0.9% in Q3 2024).

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2020 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (WDA-SA).

Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2020, they accounted for nearly half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

– Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);

– Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);

– Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.

Sources–This indicator of household consumption of goods is the compilation of a variety of statistical sources issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) (consumer price indices, turnover indices and scanner data), the Bank of France, the Statistical Data and Studies Department (SDES) of the ministry in charge of ecological transition, the French Institute of Fashion (IFM), the National Health-Insurance Administration (CNAM), the National Trade Association for Rubber and Polymers (SNCP) (renamed elanova on 1st October 2022), the Board of Oil (CPDP), the Pharmaceutical Companies Association (LEEM), GFK, Logista.
