In August 2024, the volume of sales in all trade sectors increased by 1.6% over a month, after a drop of 0.3% in July.

In August 2024, the volume of sales grew in the three main trade sectors

In August 2024*, sales volumes accelerated strongly in the retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.7% after +0.2%): it bounced back sharply in specialised stores (+2.1% after ‑0.2%) and accelerated in non-specialised stores (+2.3% after +0.9%) and in trade not in store (+8.0% after +0.1%). Within specialised stores, sales volumes recovered in almost all sub-sectors, especially in “other goods in specialised stores” (pharmacies, clothing shops, shoe shops, etc.: +2.7% after ‑0.1%) and in automotive fuels (+2.3% after ‑0.8%).

Sales volumes bounced back in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.2% after ‑0.7%). This rebound was driven in particular by the wholesales of food, beverages and tobacco (+2.1% after +1.3%) and “other specialised wholesale” (fuels retailers, wood, chemicals products, etc.: +1.4% after ‑1.5%).

Lastly, the volume of sales accelerated in August 2024 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.1% after +0.4%). It was driven by the rebound in the sales of motor vehicles maintenance and repair (+6.8% after ‑3.5%) and, to a lesser extent, by the new increase in sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories (+1.3% after +2.8%) and by motor vehicles sales, which recovered slightly (+0.5% after ‑0.1%).

Early retail trade estimate for September 2024

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in September 2024 (‑0.5% over a month). Over the third quarter of 2024, it would be 2.7% higher than in the third quarter of 2023.
