Expected prices in services

  • Source: INSEE

In October 2024, the balances of opinion on the past and expected workforce size have both sharply deteriorated and have moved away from their long-term average.

The share of business managers reporting difficulties in recruitment this quarter has retreated. This part has reached its lowest level since the second quarter 2021 but remains above its average.

The quarterly balance of opinion on the expected investment in the next three months has diminished again, moving away from its own.

Concerning the obstacles preventing them from increasing their activity, the business managers in services are almost as numerous as in July to report difficulties of supply only and difficulties of demand only. These two shares remain sharply below their average level. The part of business managers reporting difficulties of supply and demand at the same time has diminished anew and has reached its average level.

Finally, the quarterly balance on the cash position has decreased compared to July. After three quarters in a row of decline, it has thus moved below its average and has reached an unobserved level since the second quarter of 2021.

In October 2024, the business climate has brightened in accommodation and food services and in professional, scientific and technical activities

In October 2024, the business climate indicator in professional, scientific and technical activities has rebounded. Just below its long-term average, it has moved closer to its level of last June. In particular, the balances of opinion on the past activity and on the general business outlook for the sector have sharply improved and have moved above their average.

In accommodation and food services, the business climate indicator has rebounded and has returned to its average. The balances on the general business outlook for the sector and on the past and expected activity have sharply improved, whereas those on the workforce size (both past and expected) have sharply decreased.

The business climate indicator in information-communication is stable at its average. The significant rise in the balances of opinion on the activity and demand forecasts are offset by the sharp decrease in those on the past activity and past workforce size.

In administrative and support services, the business climate indicator is also stable, below its average. The balances of opinion on the workforce size (both past and expected) have sharply diminished, whereas those on the past activity and expected demand have improved.

In road freight transport, the business climate has slightly deteriorated. It has continued its almost uninterrupted decline since last June, moving further away from its average level. In particular, the balances of opinion on the expected demand and on the general business outlook have sharply decreased and have moved away from their average.

Finally, the business climate indicator in real estate activities has retreated and has moved below its long-term average. The balances of opinion on the expected demand, on the expected workforce size and on the general business outlook for the sector have diminished. Conversely, the one on the past activity has sharply risen.

Revision

The business climate indicator in services of September 2024 has been revised upwards by one point (after rounding). This revision is mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from businesses.

For further information

The composite indicators of business climate presented here are estimated independently of one another. Thus, that of the whole services cannot be deduced from the others. The same balances of opinion are included into their calculations, but they are not assigned the same weightings. Also, the indicators are scaled to have a long-run average of 100 and a standard deviation of 10. The climate series do not have the same historical beginning, so their standardisation differs slightly. Discrepancies may therefore appear from time to time.

For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the weighted percentage of “increase” responses and the weighted percentage of “decrease” responses.

This survey is part of the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.

The responses to this survey were collected between 27 September 2024 and 21 October 2024; most companies answer during the first two weeks of collection.
