French business climate composite indicator

  • Source: INSEE

In retail trade (including trade and repair of vehicles), the business climate has moved closer to its long-term average, gaining three points: it has continued its recovery, in line with the balances of opinion related to the general business outlook and the recent sales.

In wholesale trade, the bimonthly indicator of business climate has gained two points compared to July 2024 and reached back its level of May 2024: the opinion about both received merchandise from abroad and past sales has improved.

In services, the business climate is stable, after rebounding in August, but remains below its long-term average, which it dropped below in July. Both expected demand and general outlook have slightly improved, while opinion about past activity has degraded.

In manufacturing industry, the business climate is also stable. The rebound in opinion about past production is offset by a deterioration in opinion about the level of order books.

Lastly, in building construction, the business climate indicator has lost one point due to the deterioration in the balances related to the activity, past as well as expected.

The employment climate indicator has returned to its long-term average

In September 2024, the employment climate indicator has risen again. At 100, it has gained two points and has moved closer to its long-term average (100). This improvement is mainly the result of the rise in the balance of opinion regarding the expected change in the workforce size in services (excluding temporary work agencies).

French employment climate composite indicator

  • Source: INSEE

Revisions

The business climate for August 2024 in retail trade (including trade and repair of motor vehicles) has been revised upwards by one point. The business climate in wholesale trade in July 2024 has been revised upwards by one point. These revisions are mainly due to the inclusion of late responses from companies. The other synthetic indicators of climate have not been revised.

For further information

The business climate indicator summarises the information provided by the surveys in manufacturing, services, trade (retail and wholesale) and building construction. It is built from 30 balances of opinion from these surveys. The employment indicator is based on the 10 balances of employment, past and expected, from the surveys in manufacturing, services, retail trade and building construction.

The balances of opinion concerning employment in services that are used in the employment climate distinguish the services excluding temporary work employment sector from temporary work agencies. For the latter, the balances on past and expected workforce size are not weighted, unlike the other sectors.

The surveys in manufacturing industry, building construction, retail trade and trade and repair of vehicles and services are part of the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.

The responses to these surveys were collected between 28 August and 17 September 2024; most companies answer during the first two weeks of collection.
