30 August 2024 · n° 215In August 2024, consumer prices increased by 1.9% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - August 2024
These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 13 September 2024.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 1.9% in August 2024, after 2.3% in July, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This decrease in inflation should be explained by the very clear slowdown in energy prices. Over the year as a whole, petroleum product prices should fall and electricity prices should slow (mainly due to a base effect linked to the sharp rise in regulated electricity tariffs applied on 1st August 2023). Contrariwise the prices of services should accelerate over a year, particularly in accommodation and transport services. Those of food, manufactured products and tobacco should rise at or close to the same rate as in the previous month.
Over one month, consumer prices should slightly increase in August 2024 (+0.6% after +0.2% in July). Prices of manufactured products should rise over the month, driven by the rebound in clothing and footwear prices due to the end of the summer sales. The prices of food should also increase, like those of the services, particularly in accommodation and transport services. Contrariwise the prices of energy should fall while those of tobacco should be stables.
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should rise by 2.2% in August 2024, after +2.7% in July. Over one month, it should rise by 0.6%, after +0.2% in the previous month.
