In May 2024, the volume of sales in all trade sectors dropped by 0.4% over a month, following an increase of 1.1% in April.

In May 2024, the drop in the volume of sales was mainly due to wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In May 2024*, the volume of sales shrank over a month in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.8% after +1.2% in April). All the sub-sectors went down, with the sale of motor vehicles (‑2.0% after +1.0%) making the largest contribution to the decrease.

The volume of sales in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles also fell back in May 2024 (‑0.3% after +1.5%). It dropped strongly in the agricultural raw materials and live animals (‑9.2% after +2.1%) and a little more moderately in the household goods (‑1.6% after +3.5%). On the contrary, it bounced back sharply for the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (+5.0% after ‑1.2%).

Lastly, in May 2024, the volume of sales was virtually stable in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.1%) following a stability in April. It fell back in specialised stores (‑0.3% after +0.2%), decreased again in the retail trade not in stores (‑0.8% after ‑1.0%), while it started to grow again in non-specialised stores (+0.5% after a stability). Within specialised stores, the drop in the volume of sales was mainly due to the “other household equipment” (sales of furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: ‑3.1% after +0.4%).

* All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

Early retail trade estimate for June 2024

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased again in June 2024 (‑0.2% over a month). Over the second quarter of 2024, it would be 1.9% higher than in the second quarter of 2023.
