In April 2024, the volume of sales in all trade sectors increased by 1.4% over a month, after a drop of 1.5% in March.

In April 2024, the rebound in the volume of sales was mainly led by wholesale trade
In April 2024, the volume of sales in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles recovered over a month (+2.0% after ‑1.9% in March). This increase concerned all the sub-sectors, but was particularly marked in the household goods (+4.0% after ‑3.2%) and in the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +2.9% after ‑2.4%).
The volume of sales also bounced back in April 2024 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.4% after ‑2.7%).
Lastly, in April 2024, the volume of sales decreased again in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.3% after ‑0.2%), driven by the retail trade not in stores (‑3.3% after +4.3%). It was virtually stable in specialised stores (+0.1% after ‑0.7%) and stable in non-specialised stores (after ‑0.5%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales bounced back for the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: +1.5% after ‑1.4%). Conversely, it decreased for food, beverages and tobacco (‑2.4% after +0.3%) and automotive fuel (‑1.5% after +0.8%).
Early retail trade estimate for May 2024
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased again in May 2024 (‑0.2% over a month). From March to May 2024, it would be 1.6% higher than that of the same three months a year earlier.

From February to April 2024, the volume of sales increased by 2.0% compared to the same three months a year before
The cumulative volume of sales of the three months under review (February to April 2024) in overall trade was 2.0% higher than that of the same period a year earlier. This growth was observed in the three main trade sectors: the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.3%), the retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5%), as well as the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.2%). Within the retail trade sector, the volume of sales was up in specialised stores (+2.0%), in non-specialised stores (+0.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (+2.0%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in March 2024 has been revised downwards by 0.1 points to -1.5% (after rounding) compared to the previous release.
