In May 2024, consumer prices increased by 2.2% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - May 2024
These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 14 June 2024.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 2.2% in May 2024, as in April, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This stagnation in inflation should be explained by a slight slowdown over a year in prices of services and tobacco, offset by a sharp acceleration in energy prices due to a base effect. Indeed, although energy prices fell between April and May 2024, they had fallen much more between April and May 2023. Year on year, prices for manufactured products and food should remain close to their previous month levels.
Over one month, consumer prices should remain stable in May 2024 (after +0.5% in April). This price stability should be due to the sharp fall in energy prices, particularly petroleum products, offset by increases in prices of food and, to a lesser extend, of manufactured products. Prices for services and tobacco should be stable over one month.
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should rise by 2.7% in May 2024, after +2.4% in April. Over one month, it should decelerate (+0.2% after +0.6% in the previous month). The difference between the HICP and the CPI change should be explained by the fall in reimbursements in the health sector and by the change over one year in energy prices, which weight is greater in the HICP.
