In December 2023, agricultural producer prices continued to go down year on year (‑7.8% after ‑10.0% in November). These prices were nonetheless still 20.8% above their December 2019 level. Over one month, excluding fresh fruits and vegetables, agricultural producer prices were almost unchanged (‑0.1% in December after ‑1.0% in November).
In December 2023, input purchase prices went down again over one month (‑1.1% after ‑0.8% in November), as year on year (‑7.2% after ‑7.4%). However, they were still 25.1% higher than in December 2019.
Some mistake happened to be identified after the release of 31 January 2024 in prices for fuel, which is a low level of the IPPIAP. Consequently, the variations in the December 2023 index of the purchase prices of energy and, by construction, in the general index have been revised downwards by 0.1 points (after rounding). The quarterly variations of the index of purchase prices of energy in December 2023 and, by construction, of the index of purchase prices of intermediate consumption have been revised (respectively by ‑0.1 and +0.1 points). The annual variations of the index of purchase prices of energy in December 2023 and, by construction, of the index of purchase prices of intermediate consumption have been revised (respectively by ‑0.2 and +0.1 points). Prices for cereals and for oil seeds went down over a month and year on year
In December 2023, cereal prices went down over one month for the fifth consecutive month (‑1.3% after ‑2.8% in November). The fall in prices eased for soft wheat (‑1.2% in December after ‑3.5% in November) and for durum wheat (‑0.4% after ‑3.9%). Maize prices fell by 1.5%, as in November. Year on year, cereal prices continued to drop substantially (‑28.1% in December after ‑31.4% in November). They were nonetheless still well above their level of four years ago (+25.7% compared with December 2019).
Oil seed prices fell back over one month in December 2023 (‑2.3% after +0.6% in November). Soybean prices dropped (‑10.7% after +8.0%). The fall in prices for rapeseed intensified (‑2.4% after ‑0.3% in November). Prices for sunflower slowed down (+1.2% after +2.8%). Year on year, oil seed prices continued to go down in December 2023 (‑24.2% after ‑28.5% in November). However, they were 10.7% higher than in December 2019.

Year on year, fresh vegetable prices rose firmly again and fresh fruit prices decelerated
In December 2023, fresh vegetable prices rose by 23.9% year on year (after +28.1% in November), due to unfavourable weather conditions in the end of the year. Prices continued to rise very markedly for cauliflowers (+100.6% after +246.2%), chicories (+43.0% after +33.5%) and tomatoes (+47.3% after +58.8%). The rise in prices was still substantial for salads (+19.3% after +21.6%), coloured onions (+13.5% after +20.8%) and carrots (+12.0% after +11.6%). In December 2023, fresh vegetable prices were 43.4% above their December 2019 level.
Year on year, fresh fruit prices continued to decelerate in December 2023 (+7.1% after +11.2% in November). The rise in prices remained substantial for pears (+22.0% after +19.1%) and apples (+12.0% after +15.1%). Prices went down for nuts (‑2.8% after ‑7.7%) and kiwis (‑9.7% in December). Fresh fruit prices were 28.4% above their December 2019 level.

Animal prices continued to go down over one month and year on year
In December 2023, animal prices continued to go down over one month (‑0.4% after ‑2.0% in November). Prices fell for large cattle (‑1.7% after ‑2.3%) and poultry (‑0.9% after ‑0.5%). Those for pigs bounced back (+2.0% after ‑4.4% in November).
Year on year, animal prices went down again in December (‑4.4% after ‑4.5% in November). Prices dropped for poultry (‑7.1% after ‑8.5%), large cattle (‑5.4% after ‑4.2%) and pigs (‑1.8% after ‑3.5%). In December 2023, animal prices were nonetheless 27.0% higher than in December 2019.

Egg prices decelerated firmly over one month and fell year on year, milk prices went down year on year
In December 2023, egg prices decelerated over one month (+0.5% after +7.2% in November). Year on year, they fell by 7.4% (after ‑11.2% in November). They remained nonetheless well above (+79.0%) their level of December 2019.
Prices of cow milk fell back over a month (‑3.2% after +1.1% in November). They continued to go down year on year (‑4.4% after ‑4.0%). They were well above their December 2019 level (+23.4%).

Input purchase prices fell again over one month and year on year
In December 2023, the purchase prices of intermediate consumption fell again over one month (‑1.4% after ‑1.1% in November). Prices continued to go down for energy (‑4.2% after ‑3.9%), fertilizers and soil improvers (‑2.9% after ‑1.2%), plant protection products (‑1.5% after ‑1.6%) and animal food (‑0.6% after ‑0.9%). They fell back for small equipment and tools (‑2.1% after +0.2%) and veterinary expenses (‑0.2% after +0.3%). Prices were almost stable for “other goods and services” (+0.1% after ‑0.1%), seeds (‑0.1% after a stability in November) and for the maintenance of buildings (0.0% after +0.1%). Prices went slightly up for the maintenance of materials (+0.2% after +0.3%). Year on year, the purchase prices of intermediate consumption continued to go down (‑9.6% in December 2023 after ‑9.8% in November). They were nevertheless 26.4% higher than in December 2019.
In December 2023, the prices of investment goods rose by 0.2% over one month (as in November). They rose by 1.4% year on year (after +1.0% in November) and by 21.4% compared with December 2019.

Revisions
The year-on-year percentage change of the index of producer prices for agricultural products in November 2023 is unchanged (after rounding), compared to the previous release. The year-on-year percentage change of the index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production in November 2023 has been revised downwards by 0.1 percentage points, at ‑7.4%.
For further information
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
