Over a month, output decreased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply

In October 2023, output decreased again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑2.6% after ‑0.5%). It fell back in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑0.3% after +0.5%). It was down again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑0.5% after ‑0.6%) and fell back in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (‑4.2% after +6.9%). On the contrary, output rebounded in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.5% after ‑4.4%): it recovered in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+9.0% after ‑6.4%), but decreased again in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (‑1.8% after ‑3.0%). Output also bounced back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.6% after ‑1.7%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was down by 0.4%

Cumulative output over the last three months (August to October 2023) was lower than that of the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (‑0.4%), but was higher in the whole industry (+0.4%).

Over this one-year period, output expanded markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+4.9%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+6.0%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.5%). It increased strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+31.6%), due to the strike that had affected the refineries in October 2022. On the contrary, output declined in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑2.0%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑3.2%).

Output declined sharply in some energy-intensive industries compared with 2021

In the context of high electricity and gas prices invoiced to firms given the contracts agreed in 2022 for 2023, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising –or persistently high– production costs, which may affect their output. Output over the last three months (August to October 2023) remained thus down sharply compared to the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise of energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑20.1%), the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑19.5%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑12.7%).

The monthly evolution of the September 2023 manufacturing index has been revised downwards

Compared to the previous release, the evolution of the manufacturing index between August and September 2023 has been revised downwards by 0.2 points (after rounding) at ‑0.6% instead of ‑0.4%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry has also been revised downwards by 0.1 points (after rounding) at ‑0.6% instead of ‑0.5%.
