The balances of opinion related to ordering intentions and past sales have diminished sharply

In November 2023, the balances of opinion on ordering intentions and past sales have diminished again sharply and have moved away from their long-term average. The balance on the expected sales has also declined, to a lesser extent. Conversely, the one associated with the general business outlook has rebounded and has moved away from its average level. Finally, a few more business managers consider that the evolution of their business situation is difficult to forecast compared to the previous month.

Concerning employment, the balances of opinion associated with the recent and the expected changes in the workforce size have dimished again. Both of them have moved away from their long-term average.

The balance associated with the current level of stocks has increased again and has reached its highest level since 2008. The bimonthly balance on the cash position has declined again and has moved away from its own.

In November 2023, the balance of opinion on the expected selling prices has declined sharply, after remaining almost stable since July. The bimonthly balance on the past prices has also diminished. Both of them remain yet above their long-term average.

The business managers are more pessimistic in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) than in trade and repair of motor vehicles

The balance of opinion on the past sales has sharply diminished in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) but has slightly increased in trade and repair of motor vehicles. Likewise, the one on the ordering intentions has diminished sharply in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) while it has rebounded in trade and repair of motor vehicles.

The balance on the expected selling prices has diminished in both retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) and trade and repair of motor vehicles. It remains yet well above its long-term avreage in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles) whereas it lies below its own in trade and repair of motor vehicles.

Finally, the balance on the current level of stocks has increased again in retail trade (excluding motor vehicles), while it has retreated in trade and repair of motor vehicles.

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles.

For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.

This survey is part of the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, partly funded by the European Commission.

Company responses were collected between 26 October and 20 November 2023.
