Oil prices retreated

In October 2023, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars retreated (‑3.4% after +8.7% in September), averaging $90.3 per barrel. In euros, the downturn in the price per barrel was somewhat less marked (‑2.3% after +11.0%), due to the slight depreciation of the euro against the dollar over the period.

Industrial raw material prices in euros were virtually stable

In October 2023, prices in euros of industrial raw materials were virtually stable (‑0.1% after +5.6% in September): those of minerals fell back (‑0.7% after +5.8%) and those of agro-industrial materials slackened slightly (+3.6% after +4.2%).

Ferrous metal prices edged down (‑0.6% after +11.2%), as did those for non-ferrous metals (‑0.8% after +2.7%) and precious metals (‑0.5% after +1.7%).

Prices for natural rubber slowed significantly (+3.4% after +10.6%) as did, to a lesser extent, those for hides (+1.1% after +2.2%). Paper pulp prices continued to rise sharply (+7.0% after +7.2%). Prices for natural textile fibres recovered (+1.9% after ‑0.1%), as did, albeit more moderately, those for sawn softwood (+0.2% after ‑0.4%). Conversely, prices for tropical woods continued to decrease (‑0.8% after ‑0.3%).

Food commodity prices in euros increased slightly

In October 2023, food commodity prices in euros rose again a little (+0.6% after +0.2% in September), driven in particular by the rebound in meat prices (+2.8% after ‑4.7%). Sugar prices decelerated substantially (+2.2% after +12.3%), as did those for tropical foodstuffs (+0.4% after +3.4%). Cereal prices fell back (‑2.1% after +0.1%) and those for oilseeds were down again slightly (‑0.4% after ‑0.2%). Finally, prices for seafood were steady (+0.0% after +0.9%).
