In September 2023, oil prices in euros accelerated again (+11.0% month-on-month after +8.9% in August and +4.9% in July). The prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) started to rise again (+2.6% after ‑0.5%), driven by the strong rebound in those of industrial raw materials (+5.6% after ‑0.4%). Food commodity prices recovered very slightly (+0.2% after ‑0.5%).

Oil prices continued to rise sharply
In September 2023, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars continued to rise sharply (+8.7% after +7.4% in August), averaging $93.5 per barrel. In euro terms, the price per barrel accelerated even more significantly (+11.0% after +8.9%), due to the depreciation of the euro against the dollar over the period.

Industrial raw material prices in euros recovered
In September 2023, prices in euros of industrial raw materials rebounded (+5.6% after ‑0.4% in August), driven by both those of minerals (+5.8% after ‑0.5%) and agro-industrial materials (+4.2% after ‑0.1%).
Ferrous metal prices picked up strongly (+11.2% after ‑1.5%), as did, to a lesser extent, those for precious metals (+1.7% after ‑0.4%). Prices for non-ferrous metals gathered pace (+2.7% after +0.3%).
Prices for natural rubber accelerated sharply (+10.6% after +1.2%), as did those for paper pulp (+7.2% after +0.8%) and, more moderately, those for hides (+2.2% after +1.4%). Conversely, prices for sawn softwood edged down (‑0.4% after ‑4.7%), as did those for tropical woods (‑0.3% after 0.0%). Finally, prices for natural textile fibres were virtually stable (‑0.1% after +4.8%).

Food commodity prices in euros showed contrasting trends
In September 2023, food commodity prices in euros increased very slightly on average (+0.2% after ‑0.5% in August), but trends remained contrasted from one product to another. Prices for sugar accelerated considerably (+12.3% after +2.1%), as did, to a lesser extent, those for tropical foodstuffs (+3.4% after +0.2%). Seafood prices, for their part, recovered a little (+0.9% after ‑8.5%). In contrast, meat prices retreated (‑4.7% after +4.1%) and those for oilseeds decreased very slightly (‑0.2% after +0.8%). Finally, prices for cereals were virtually stable (+0.1% after +8.3%).
