In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

A document detailing the methodology used to compile the turnover indices and the related volume indices is now available in the Insee Méthodes collection.

In May 2023, the volume of sales in trade increased by 1.1% over a month, following a drop of 1.4% in April.

In May 2023, sales volume recovery led mostly by wholesale trade

In May 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles bounced back over a month (+1.6%) after two consecutive drops in April (‑1.5%) and in March (‑1.0%). This increase was mainly due to the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (+5.3% after ‑3.4%) and the “agricultural raw materials and live animals” (+7.5% after +3.4%).

The volume of sales also recovered in May 2023 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7% after ‑0.5% in April), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (+2.3% after ‑0.7%).

Lastly, the volume of sales was stable in May 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (0.0%), after a sharp decrease in April (‑1.5%). It went down for the third consecutive month in non-specialised stores (‑0,7% after ‑1,2% in April and ‑1,1% in March). In contrast, it bounced back slightly both in specialised stores (+0.3% after ‑1.0%) and in retail trade not in stores (+0.7% after ‑5.1%). Within specialised stores, most of the increase came from the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: +1.0% after +0.7%) and automotive fuel (+2.6% after ‑9.0%). Conversely, the volume of sales decreased sharply in information and communication equipment (‑6.3% after a virtual stability).

Early retail trade estimate for June 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased in June 2023 (+0.4% over a month). Over the second quarter of 2023, it would be 3.5% lower than in the second quarter of 2022.
